It is Falls Prevention Awareness Week, September 18-24! This is a good time to reflect on the steps that you, your friends and relatives can take to reduce the risk of falling.
The National Council on Aging has crated this wonderful took to check what is your risk of fall. Check it up! Only a few questions and you will know what is your risk and what steps to take: Falls Free CheckUp
One of the easiest steps to reduce the risk of falls is to practice taichi! So, if you are curious to try it, please register into the taichi 10-week programs offered at 30th Street Senior Center.
Some facts about falls
• Falls are the leading cause of both fatal injury and nonfatal trauma related hospital admissions among older adults.
• One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year; 20% are injured.
• Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.
